Minimally-invasive aesthetic medicine procedures are gaining popularity every year. These cosmetic procedures can help rejuvenate your skin while also reducing aging signs that often appear in your face.
Two of the most popular types of cosmetic procedures today are Botox and PDO threads. Each of these procedures are done relatively quickly, produce good results and have little if no downtime once the procedure is done.
That being said, both Botox and PDO threads are best used in certain applications or to achieve different things.
Below, we will discuss PDO threads vs Botox, and the former has many applications that the latter simply can’t address.
Typically speaking, the results from Botox will last about three to six months. After that point, you will most likely have to repeat the procedure in order to keep up with the results. With PDO threads, results typically last at least a year, if not much longer. In fact, some people may be able to still see the results from PDO threads up to two years after the procedure was done.

What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable material. It is essentially a protein known as botulinum toxin that is injected into the skin.
It works by blocking signals that nerves typically send to muscles, which in essence temporarily paralyzes them. As a result, the muscles end up relaxing, which reduces how wrinkles and fine lines appear on your face.
This is why Botox is often used around eyes, between eyebrows and on foreheads to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. For some people, it may even prevent wrinkles from forming in the future.
It’s been on the market for more than 20 years now, and has become very popular.
What are PDO Threads?
PDO threads are thin surgical sutures that are inserted into your skin using a pre-loaded cannula. They are a synthetic polymer called polydioxanone that is 100% biocompatible and biodegradable.
Once they are inserted into your skin, your body will use natural processes to break them down over time.
There are many different types of PDO threads, which is why there are so many different applications for them.
Some are called barbed threads. These have little “barbs” on them which grip onto skin and lift it up.
These PDO threads are used to produce results akin to a traditional facelift. They can add definition to certain parts of the face, such as under eyes or around lips, or even lift sagging skin in the forehead, neck and more.
There are also smooth PDO threads, which aren’t used to lift skin but rather smooth it out.
Both types of PDO threads also work so well because they result in the body producing extra collagen. This is a natural process that the body does to break down the PDO threads. In doing so, it helps the results of the procedure last longer and also gives your skin a mouth youthful, plumper and smoother look.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Another big advantage that PDO threads provide over Botox is how long the results last.
The fact that the results last longer means that you won’t have to repeat the procedure as often with PDO threads, which in turn reduces your long-term costs.
Keep in mind that how long the results will last for you depends on a number of factors, including your age, skin type and condition, metabolism, genetics and more.
What is the Typical Recovery Time?
The recovery time for both Botox and PDO threads is very similar. With both, you’ll be able to resume most of your daily activities immediately after you leave the office.
With PDO threads, you will likely be instructed to avoid strenuous activities for a week or so after your procedure. This is to ensure that the threads stay in place and don’t move around.
While this is slightly longer than Botox in terms of downtime and recovery, it’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things. For most people, that extra time won’t make much of a difference, especially since it doesn’t affect a lot of their day-to-day activities.
PDO Threads Provide a Lot of Advantages over Botox
While Botox certainly has its place in cosmetic medicine, PDO threads provide a lot of advantages over it.
They are extremely versatile, meaning they can be used in for more than just addressing wrinkles. The results typically last longer, which means you won’t have to repeat the procedure as often and spend extra money. Plus, the downtime and recovery period aren’t that much longer at all, meaning you’ll see the results quickly.
