PDO threads are valued for the amazing anti-aging results they can provide to patients. As a minimally-invasive treatment, they are much more accessible and affordable to people than traditional surgical facelifts, plus they don’t require nearly the same recovery period and downtime.
PDO threads are used today to address a number of common concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, sagging or drooping skin, or a lack of definition. The procedures typically take about an hour to complete, and you’ll be able to resume most of your daily activities as soon as you leave the office.
As a synthetic material that is 100% biocompatible and biodegradable, PDO threads get naturally absorbed by the body and don’t leave behind massive signs that a procedure has been completed.
A common question people have, though, is whether PDO threads cause scar tissue. In this article, we’ll discuss this topic and why that is.
One of the biggest benefits of PDO threads is that there is a very low chance that they will cause scarring.

Do PDO Threads Cause Surface Scarring?
One of the biggest benefits of PDO threads is that there is a very low chance that they will cause scarring. There are a few reasons for this.
First, the threads themselves have been used in medical procedures for more than 50 years now. They are often used in surgical procedures as dissolvable sutures, since they are so effective and can be broken down by the body naturally.
Second, the puncture sites where the PDO threads are inserted are very small. They are inserted using a preloaded cannula, which is very similar to how an IV line is inserted.
Third, the procedure itself doesn’t cause significant trauma to the body. Unlike surgery, the PDO threads are simply put into place under the skin, with parts of the skin being lifted, and then the ends are snipped off.
All in all, this typically leads to a very low risk for surface scarring. If the PDO threads aren’t placed correctly — either by accident or by an inexperienced provider — that could lead to surface scarring either caused by the incorrect placement or by an infection.
Do PDO Threads Cause Scar Tissue?
Scar tissue is slightly different from surface scarring. Scar tissue is essentially a group of cells as well as collagen that forms in the body to cover an injury. It can happen following surgery, a medical event such as a heart attack or another injury.
PDO threads can leave scar tissue behind underneath your skin when they dissolve. This is because the body will recognize a foreign object has been inserted, and will begin to produce extra collagen in the treatment area as a result.
This collagen works to break down the PDO threads naturally, which leads to many positive effects. This includes ensuring that the results of the treatment last longer, while also making your skin more elastic, smooth and youthful looking.
The extra collagen that is produced, though, can lead to scar tissue forming under the surface of the skin. This doesn’t happen for all patients all the time, though, and if it does, it’s often very minor.
While some people may say that scar tissue can, over time, become thicker and make it harder to effectively perform future surgical procedures, the idea with PDO threads is that you won’t have to undergo surgery. Not only that, but PDO threads are a treatment that can be repeated as often as you want, and the results have proven to be good.
So, while scar tissue formation is a potential risk and side effect of PDO threads treatments, it isn’t common nor worrisome for most people.
Question | Answer | Risk Level | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Do PDO threads cause surface scarring? | Very unlikely. The procedure uses small puncture sites and minimally invasive techniques that rarely leave surface scars. | Low | Improper technique or infection could increase risk. |
Can PDO threads cause scar tissue beneath the skin? | Yes, mild internal scar tissue may form as the body produces collagen to break down the threads. | Low to Moderate | This collagen response helps prolong the rejuvenating effects. |
Is the scar tissue harmful? | Generally no. It’s usually minimal and not a cause for concern in most patients. | Low | Rarely affects future procedures unless excessive. |
How can scar tissue risk be minimized? | Choose a skilled provider using high-quality threads like V Soft Lift. Follow all post-treatment care instructions. | Very Low | Experience and product quality make a significant difference. |
Can PDO threads be repeated safely? | Yes, they are designed for repeat treatments with minimal cumulative risk of scarring. | Low | Frequent use is safe when monitored by a qualified professional. |
