People who are looking for a rejuvenated look in their face are turning at an increasing rate to PDO thread treatments. These minimally-invasive, non-surgical treatments are a great way to give you back that youthful look in your face.
Whether you’re looking to address fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, lack of definition or something else, PDO thread treatments provide great results in a short amount of time.
In most cases, PDO thread treatments are completed in less than an hour, and only require the use of local numbing agents to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure. In addition, you’ll be able to resume most of your daily activities as soon as you leave the office.
Depending on the type of treatment you are getting, as well as your specific skin type, you will be able to see some of the results immediately — with the full impact of those results appearing gradually over time.
There are some things that your provider will recommend for post-care treatment to ensure the results of your procedure are as good and long-lasting as they can be. To that point, one question that many people have is whether they can wear makeup after a PDO thread treatment.
We’ll discuss that in more length below.
It’s a good idea to not put any makeup on your face for at least 12 hours after a PDO thread treatment, though your provider may recommend that you don’t wear makeup for a day or two.

How Does a PDO Thread Treatment Work?
PDO threads are thin threads made of a synthetic material that is 100% biocompatible and biodegradable. In other words, there is a low chance that there will be a negative reaction to the threads, and your body will use natural processes to break them down over time.
Because of this, PDO threads have actually been used as dissolvable sutures in surgical procedures for many years now.
Before the threads are inserted into your skin, your provider will ensure you are comfortable by using local numbing agents. Then, they will insert the PDO threads using a preloaded cannula, which is similar to how an IV line is inserted.
Next, they will position the threads perfectly to achieve your desired results. For instance, if you want part of your skin lifted, they will position the PDO threads with barbs correctly so that it mimics the results of a traditional facelift.
Once in the correct spot, they will snip off the end of the PDO threads, and check for symmetry and that there is no thread protrusion.
As mentioned before, if you are getting a PDO thread lift, you’ll be able to see some of the results immediately. Over time, your body will produce extra collagen in the treatment area to break down the threads.
This collagen has many side benefits, including ensuring that the results last longer, while also making your skin look smoother and more elastic, giving you a more natural youthful look.
Can You Wear Makeup After a PDO Thread Treatment?
While you’ll be able to resume a majority of your day-to-day activities once you leave the office, there are some things that you should avoid doing for a period of time following a PDO thread treatment.
One is wearing makeup. It’s a good idea to not put any makeup on your face for at least 12 hours after a PDO thread treatment, though your provider may recommend that you don’t wear makeup for a day or two.
The reason for this is that your skin is the most sensitive it will be immediately after a PDO thread procedure is done. As such, even cosmetic products that are light and don’t often cause skin irritation can cause issues if they’re used in this timeframe.
Not only that, your skin needs to “breathe” as much as possible after the PDO thread treatment is completed. Makeup and other cosmetic products can actually serve as a barrier to this, suffocating the skin instead of allowing it to breathe.
Applying cosmetics also requires applying pressure to the skin, which is something else that should be avoided after a PDO thread treatment, as the pressure could compromise the positioning of the threads themselves.
That’s why it’s also generally recommended to avoid deep facial cleansing and massages, and using other skincare products on your face, for a period of time following a PDO thread procedure.
Guideline | Details |
---|---|
Wait Time Before Makeup | Minimum 12 hours; some providers recommend 24–48 hours |
Reason for Waiting | Skin is most sensitive immediately after treatment; risk of irritation |
Pressure on Skin | Applying makeup involves pressure that may disturb thread positioning |
Skin Breathing | Makeup can block pores and prevent skin from “breathing” |
Safe Cosmetic Use | Use only non-comedogenic, gentle products once cleared by provider |
