One of the facts of life is that our bodies show the signs of aging as we get older. Unfortunately, these signs are often very visible, too, since they tend to appear most prominently on our face.
Different people experience different signs of aging at different stages of their life. Some of the most common effects are wrinkles, loss of definition, skin that’s not as shiny or smooth, and sagging skin.
Luckily, many different minimally-invasive treatments have hit the market in recent years that profess to be able to reverse some of these signs of aging. Among the most popular treatments is PDO threads.
These thin dissolvable sutures have been used in surgical procedures for years, and have hit the mainstream of aesthetic medicine in the last 25 years or so. But, can PDO threads tighten my loose skin?
Below, we’ll analyze what PDO threads are as well as how they can tighten loose skin.
The PDO threads themselves have barbs on the end of them. These are put there so they can grab onto parts of your skin, which your provider can then use to lift up sagging skin and reposition it higher on your face.

How Do PDO Threads Work?
As mentioned, PDO threads are thin threads that are made from a synthetic material that is 100% biocompatible and biodegradable. What this means is that there’s a very low risk that they will have adverse effects for people and that the body will break them down naturally.
These threads are inserted into your skin using what’s called a preloaded cannula, which works similarly to how an IV line is inserted. There is no need for general anesthesia with PDO threads procedures, either, as they are generally painless.
Your provider will use local numbing agents before inserting the PDO threads to ensure you are comfortable. You shouldn’t feel pain at all, though you may feel some tugging and pressure.
The PDO threads themselves have barbs on the end of them. These are put there so they can grab onto parts of your skin, which your provider can then use to lift up sagging skin and reposition it higher on your face.
In doing so, the PDO threads will be put in a position to reverse this sign of aging, essentially tightening any sagging skin on your face. Once the threads are in the proper position, your provider will snip off the end and ensure that it is inserted properly into your skin.

What Happens after the PDO Threads are Inserted?
The immediate effect of the PDO threads is that your skin will be lifted and loose skin will be tightened. The barbs will hold the skin in place to where your provider has positioned the PDO threads, based on feedback from you in a previous consultation.
This means that as soon as you walk out of the office, you will see an instant effect from the procedure itself. That’s not all, though, as the results will improve even more over time.
Once the PDO threads are inserted, your body will recognize them as a foreign object and use natural processes to start breaking them down. To do so, it will produce extra collagen in the area where the threads have been inserted.
This extra collagen is actually quite beneficial for anti-aging effects, and for the results of the PDO threads procedure you just had. On one hand, the collagen will help the results of the procedure last longer.
And on the other hand, the extra collagen will also leave your skin looking smoother, shinier (in a good way) and more youthful. In essence, you will be getting a double-bang for your buck — immediate results from the PDO thread lift and long-term benefits from the extra production of collagen.
What are Some of the Other Benefits of PDO Threads?
In addition to being a minimally-invasive procedure that doesn’t require surgery, PDO threads can be used for a number of different end results — all of which work quite well.
These procedures are much more affordable than traditional surgical facelifts, too, which makes them more accessible for more people.
In addition, the downtime and recovery time are very low for PDO threads procedures. In fact, you will be able to resume most of your day-to-day activities as soon as you leave the office.
Your provider will give you a list of things that you should avoid for the first few weeks following the procedure, such as not taking certain medications, not doing strenuous exercises and not getting deep facial massages or doing deep facial cleansing.
Finally, while the results from PDO threads aren’t permanent, you can repeat the procedure at any time to achieve the look you’re going for.
