There’s a lot that we can control in life, but one thing that is unfortunately out of our hands is Father Time. All of us get older, and as much as we like to fight it, the signs of aging can creep up on us.
In many ways, these signs of aging appear on our face. Whether it be sagging skin, lines and wrinkles or lack of definition, our face and skin changes as we get older.
Many people have the desire to do something about it, to reverse the signs of aging where possible. Luckily, this is not only an option but is very accessible due to the many breakthroughs in aesthetic medicine.
Today, one of the leading procedures are those done using PDO threads. These thin threads are inserted into your skin and help reverse the signs of aging by mimicking the results of traditional facelifts. The great part about PDO threads is that they are minimally-invasive and don’t require surgery.
If you’ve never had a procedure with PDO threads before, you might be wondering what it entails and whether there can be any complications. Specifically, you may have heard about possible thread extrusion and are wondering whether that can happen with PDO threads.
We’ll discuss all of those topics in more detail below.
Thread extrusions are possible with PDO threads procedures, but it should only happen if your provider makes a mistake. This is a major reason why you should only choose a practitioner who you can trust, who has great reviews and who has a lot of experience with PDO threads procedures.

What is a PDO Threads Procedure?
PDO threads procedures are minimally-invasive procedures that don’t require surgery. They are done in outpatient settings, most of the time in the office of aesthetic medicine providers.
The practitioner will simply use local numbing agents in the treated area to make sure you’re comfortable before the procedure starts. Then, they will insert the thin PDO threads into your skin via a preloaded cannula, similar to how an IV is done.
These procedures are generally pain-free, though you may experience some slight pressure, tugging and/or pulling while they are being inserted and put into place.
In most cases, PDO threads procedures are completed within one hour. And when they are done, you’ll be able to resume most of your daily activities immediately.
How Do PDO Threads Work?
PDO threads work in a number of ways.
Barbed PDO threads will grab onto parts of your skin to lift them up or create definition. For instance, if you are experiencing sagging skin, your provider can use the barbed threads to lift it back up.
They are also frequently used to fix wrinkle lines on the neck, and to add definition around the lips and eyelids.
All types of PDO threads are completely biodegradable and biocompatible. This means there is a low chance for negative reactions to them.
Over time, your body will use natural processes to break down the PDO threads, as they are essentially dissolvable sutures. When this happens, your body will produce extra collagen, which has great effects.
Not only does this collagen help the results of the procedure last longer, but it also makes your skin look plumper and have more elasticity, which gives you a more youthful look.
What is the Associated Recovery Period?
Following a procedure with PDO threads, you’ll be able to resume many of your daily activities as soon as you leave the office. You’ll likely be advised to avoid strenuous exercising, facial massages and deep facial cleansing for a few weeks.
You also might experience some minor swelling and/or bruising in the area, but that will usually resolve itself in about a week. Ice and some over-the-counter medications can be used to treat it.
Your provider should provide you with a full set of instructions for care following your procedure, which should also advise you to avoid taking NSAIDs and aspiring for a few weeks.
Can Thread Extrusion Happen with PDO Threads?
You may be concerned that thread extrusion could happen with a PDO threads procedure. What this means is that the thread could poke out of your skin after it is inserted.
This could happen if the PDO thread isn’t properly inserted into your skin sufficiently once the end of it has been cut. If this is done incorrectly, then thread extrusion could happen in time as you move normally.
Thread extrusions aren’t a major medical concern, but they are unsightly and won’t help you get the results you’re looking for. Luckily, if this does happen, you can visit your provider again, and they can easily fix it.
