Are you searching for a way to address wrinkles, sagging skin, fine lines and other signs of aging in your skin? Do you want a solution that doesn’t require surgery and, as a result, a long recovery process?
Then, you’re in luck, as there are many different options for you today. No longer is a traditional surgical facelift the only way to get a more youthful look in your face.
There are many minimally-invasive procedures that can be done right from the comfort of a local practitioner’s office, without the need for surgery or general anesthesia.
Two of these most well-known alternatives are PDO threads and microneedling. While you may have heard extensively about both procedures, you might not be very familiar about what they entail, how they are similar and different, and which one is the preferred treatment.
Below, we’ll dive deeper into these topics so you can see why PDO threads are the preferred treatment.
Microneedling will only help produce extra collagen and elastin. While this is certainly a good thing, it means that the results will be quite limited. PDO threads, by contrast, will not only result in your body producing extra collagen and elastin, but they can also be used to lift parts of your face. This means that you can get one of these procedures to mimic the effects of a traditional facelift, to give definition to certain parts of your face, to lift sagging skin and to treat wrinkles.

What are PDO Threads?
PDO threads are thin threads that are inserted into your skin to lift up parts of your skin and give it a more youthful look. They have barbs attached to them, which grab onto parts of your skin to mimic the results of a traditional facial.
In this way, they can be used to add definition around lips and under eyelids, treat wrinkles and other lines, and lift sagging skin. These threads are inserted via a preloaded canula, much in the same way that IVs are done.
Before the threads are inserted, your provider will use local numbing agents to ensure you are comfortable.
PDO threads are 100% biocompatible and biodegradable, which means that your body will break them down over time using natural processes. In fact, they’ve been used as dissolvable sutures in surgical procedures for more than 50 years now because of this.
As your body works to break down the threads, it produces extra collagen. This, in turn, helps the results of the procedure to last longer, while also giving your skin more elasticity, more plumpness and a more youthful look overall.
You can resume most of your daily activities the moment you leave the office, too, which is one of the main advantages that PDO threads provide.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is another minimally-invasive procedure that is popular among people who are looking to rejuvenate their skin. They do this in a much different way than PDO threads do, though.
With microneedling, a provider will make very small holes into your skin’s top layer, using thin needles. This causes damage to the top layer of the skin, which causes it to go into healing mode immediately.
Just like with PDO threads, your body will start to produce extra elastin and collagen to aid in the healing process. This, then, helps to make your skin much smoother and firmer.
While microneedling is typically done in the face, it can also be used on other parts of the body, too.
This procedure usually doesn’t require any local numbing agents at all, though your practitioner could decide to use some if you’re afraid that the procedure might hurt. Overall, it is non-painful, though it may be a little uncomfortable when you are having your skin punctured.
Just like PDO threads, you’ll have little to no restrictions once the procedure is over, and the procedure itself won’t take much time at all — less than an hour start to finish.
Are PDO Threads or Microneedling Better?
While PDO threads and microneedling are both respectful alternatives to a traditional facelift, there are many limitations to microneedling, which is why PDO threads are usually the preferred treatment.
These are all things that microneedling simply can’t produce in any comparable way.
